Heat, humidity and power

Chennai's climate is hard on electronics, so check a used console more carefully here than elsewhere.

• Overheating. Let the console run a game for several minutes. A fan that roars or a console that shuts down points to dust build-up or worn thermal paste.
• Corrosion. Coastal humidity can corrode ports. Look at the USB and HDMI ports and the controller charging port for green or brown marks.
• Power. Ask whether it was used with surge protection or a stabiliser. Voltage swings during storms and power cuts damage power supplies.
• Dust. Look into the vents; heavy dust means it has run hot.

Discs, controllers and accounts

Check discs for deep scratches and confirm they match your console — PS4 discs play on a PS5 with a disc drive, but not the reverse. Test controllers for stick drift by leaving them still in a menu, and press every button and trigger. Ask the seller to sign out of their account and factory-reset the console in front of you, and avoid consoles that seem locked, banned or modified. Digital codes that came in a box have usually been used.
