Buy & Sell Used Products in Mumbai

How the Mumbai second-hand market works

Two things drive it: space and mobility. A one-bedroom flat in Malad or Chembur cannot take a seven-seater sofa, so compact, modular and space-saving furniture sells faster here than anywhere else — and holds its price better. And because Mumbai leases turn over quickly, whole households come up for sale at once: fridge, washing machine, bed and dining table, often from the same seller. Buying a set from one person in one visit saves you several trips across a city where travel is the real cost.

Mumbai's own habits help you inspect well. Buyers here have always tested electronics before paying, the way Lamington Road shoppers do. Do the same in a private deal: run the washing machine through a cycle, check that the fridge is already cooling, boot the laptop and look at the battery health on the spot.

Buying and selling by area

• Western suburbs — Andheri, Goregaon, Malad and Borivali carry the largest flow of household goods and appliances.
• Central Mumbai and Navi Mumbai — Thane, Mulund, Ghatkopar, Vashi and Kharghar have larger flats and therefore larger furniture; worth the travel for a dining set or a wardrobe.
• Powai and BKC — working professionals and students turn over laptops, monitors, chairs and desks. See laptops in Mumbai.
• South Mumbai — older homes mean solid wood furniture and genuine collectibles turn up; check art & collectibles.

Moving what you buy

Before you agree a price on anything large, ask two questions the seller will know the answer to: is there a working lift, and will the piece fit through the door and into it? A wardrobe that has to be carried up seven floors changes the cost of the deal completely. Check the society's rules too — many Mumbai buildings allow shifting only during fixed hours and ask for a gate pass for anything leaving the premises.

Selling in Mumbai

Mention the line and the nearest station — "Ghatkopar, 10 minutes from the station" tells a Mumbai buyer more than any address. Give dimensions for furniture, state the age of appliances, and photograph in daylight. Post a free ad, or read our guides to selling used furniture and selling used appliances.
