Mumbai changes phones fast. From Andheri, Borivali and Malad to Dadar, Chembur, Ghatkopar and Navi Mumbai, owners list used iPhones, Android phones and tablets whenever a new model launches or an upgrade offer ends.
These are private sellers, not shops. Meet the owner, check the phone properly and pay directly — no commission.
A checklist for a used phone
- IMEI. Dial *#06# and match the IMEI with the box and the bill. Check it on the government’s Sanchar Saathi portal to make sure the phone has not been reported lost or stolen. Phone theft on crowded local trains is a real problem, so do not skip this.
- Account locks. On an iPhone, the seller must sign out of their Apple ID and turn off Find My before you pay. On Android, the phone should be factory reset with the seller’s Google account removed. A locked phone is useless to you.
- Battery. On an iPhone, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health. On Android, watch how quickly the charge drops while you test the phone.
- Screen and body. Look for dead pixels, touch dead zones, lifted screens (a swollen battery) and signs of a replaced display. Test cameras, speakers, the microphone, Face ID or fingerprint, and charging.
- Water damage. Monsoon rain gets into phones. Ask directly, and look for fogging under the camera glass and corrosion in the charging port.
- Your SIM. Put your own SIM in and make a call, and check mobile data and Wi-Fi.
Fair price
Compare the asking price with the same model and storage in current listings, and adjust for battery health, repairs and whether the bill, box and charger are included. A phone with an original bill and some warranty left is worth more. Our guide on how to price a used iPhone explains the main factors. Budget buyers can browse phones under ₹10,000 or under ₹15,000.
Meeting and paying safely
Meet in a busy public place — a mall or café near a station works well — and in daylight. Never pay a token amount online, share an OTP or scan a QR code to “receive” money, and walk away from sellers who will not let you check the IMEI. Read our safety tips.
