Kolkata rewards second-hand buyers more than most Indian cities: older homes in the north and centre give up genuinely well-made wooden furniture, while Salt Lake, New Town and Rajarhat supply the modern flat-share end — beds, desks, washing machines and electronics from tenants on the move.

Two Kolkatas, two kinds of listings
North and central Kolkata — Shyambazar, Bagbazar, Baghbazar, Maniktala, Bhowanipore and Ballygunge — are full of homes that have owned the same furniture for decades. Sheesham and teak almirahs, writing desks, planter's chairs and dining tables surface here, and they are worth far more than the particle-board pieces sold new at the same price. Salt Lake, New Town, Rajarhat and the Sector V belt are the opposite: two- to four-year-old flat furniture, appliances, monitors and desks. Behala, Tollygunge and Garia sit in between, with steady family-household turnover. Howrah listings also appear on this page; check the locality on each ad, because crossing the river adds real time.
For anything electronic, Kolkata's habit is to test in the shop the way buyers do at Chandni Chowk market. Do exactly that privately: power it on, run it, check every port and button before you pay.

Checking old furniture properly
With genuinely old pieces, the wood matters more than the finish. Tap the panels — solid wood sounds dense, veneered board sounds hollow. Look for tiny round holes and fine powder underneath, which mean borer; that is repairable but must be priced in. Check that drawers run on wooden runners without dropping, and that the piece is not held together by new nails. Kolkata's humidity also means you should check the back panel and the base of anything that has stood against an outside wall.
Selling in Kolkata
Mention your para and nearest Metro station — "Dum Dum, 5 minutes from the station" — and give real dimensions, since staircases in older buildings are narrow and buyers will ask. Photograph in daylight and describe faults honestly. Post a free ad, or read our guide to selling used furniture.
Other cities: Delhi and Lucknow.
