Kolkata’s long, humid summer keeps demand for air conditioners, fridges and coolers high, and families across Salt Lake, New Town, Behala, Tollygunge, Garia and Howrah list old and second hand appliances when they upgrade or move.
Every listing here is from a local owner. See the appliance running, check it properly, and pay the seller directly — there is no commission.
What to check on used appliances in Kolkata
- Rust first. Kolkata’s humidity is the biggest enemy. Look under fridges, behind washing machines and at AC outdoor units for rust on the body, base and pipes.
- Air conditioners. Run it for a good ten minutes and feel the air get properly cold. Check the outdoor unit for corroded fins and oily patches on the copper joints, which suggest a gas leak. Ask whether it is inverter or fixed speed, and budget for uninstallation and reinstallation by a technician.
- Fridges. Switch it on and check the freezer starts frosting and the compressor runs without loud knocking. Inspect door gaskets for tears and mould.
- Washing machines. Run a short cycle including a spin. Listen for drum bearing noise and check the inlet and drain pipes for leaks.
- Waterlogging history. Ground-floor homes in low-lying areas sometimes flood in the monsoon. Ask directly, and look for tide marks or rust along the bottom of the appliance.
Where the listings come from
Salt Lake and New Town flats list newer ACs and front-load washing machines as people relocate. Older homes in south and north Kolkata list well-used fridges and coolers that still have years left in them. Kolkata’s Chandni Chowk market near Esplanade is where many locals go for spares and repairs, which helps when you need to replace a part after buying. A fair price and getting it home
Compare the asking price with the same model in current listings and adjust for age, energy rating and condition. Arrange a hand-cart, a tempo or an app-based goods vehicle, and carry fridges upright; let a fridge stand for a few hours before switching it on.
