Browse used air conditioners listed by people across India — split and window ACs, inverter and non-inverter, from Voltas, LG, Daikin, Samsung, Blue Star, Hitachi, Lloyd and others. Many come from people relocating or upgrading, and a well-maintained AC can cool well for many more summers.
Contact the seller directly, see the AC running before you pay, and agree who handles uninstallation and installation. Olditems takes no commission and never handles payment or delivery.
Split or window AC?
- Window AC. One unit that fits in a window or wall opening. Easier and cheaper to remove and reinstall, but noisier indoors.
- Split AC. Quieter, with an indoor and an outdoor unit joined by copper piping. Moving it needs a technician to pump down the gas, disconnect the pipes and reinstall at your end.
Match tonnage to your room
As a rough guide, a 1 ton AC suits a small bedroom, a 1.5 ton AC a typical bedroom or small living room, and 2 ton larger rooms. Top-floor flats, west-facing rooms, large windows and hot cities need more capacity. An undersized AC runs constantly and never cools the room properly.
Star rating and inverter
The BEE star label shows energy efficiency. Star rating standards have been revised over the years, so an older 5-star AC may not match a new 5-star model — check the year on the label. Inverter ACs adjust compressor speed and usually save power; non-inverter ACs switch on and off.
Test it running
- Cooling. Ask for the AC to be running when you arrive. Air from the indoor unit should feel clearly cold within a few minutes.
- Compressor and outdoor unit. The compressor should start smoothly and hum steadily; loud knocking, rattling or frequent tripping are bad signs. Check the outdoor fan spins freely.
- Gas. Ask when gas was last refilled and which refrigerant it uses (R32, R410A, or older R22). Frequent refills point to a leak.
- Leaks, smell and remote. Look for water dripping indoors, a musty smell from the vents and a working remote.
Copper or aluminium coil
Copper condenser coils are easier to repair and generally more durable, especially near the sea. Aluminium coils are common in budget models and are harder to repair if they leak. Ask the seller or check the model specifications.
Uninstallation, installation and paperwork
Agree up front who pays the technician to uninstall, who transports the units, and who pays for installation, a new outdoor stand, extra copper pipe and a gas top-up if needed. Ask for the bill and any compressor warranty card, since compressor warranties are often longer than the main warranty.
