Buying used books
- Check the edition and year for textbooks and exam guides — syllabuses change.
- Flip through every page for missing pages, heavy highlighting, water damage or loose binding.
- Buy sets — full-year textbook sets and exam preparation bundles usually cost much less than buying books one at a time.
Buying gym and sports equipment
- Treadmills: run it at different speeds and inclines, and listen to the motor. Check the belt for wear and ask when it was last lubricated.
- Weights and benches: check for rust, cracked plates, and wobble in benches and racks.
- Cricket bats: look for cracks along the edges and toe, and ask whether the bat was knocked in.
- Exercise cycles: check the resistance levels, display and pedal crank for noise.
Buying musical instruments
For guitars, check that the neck is straight and the strings don’t buzz; for keyboards, test every key and the power adapter; for harmoniums, check the bellows for air leaks and play every reed. If you are unsure, take a musician friend along.
