Used Tools, Machinery & Industrial Equipment

Checking used power tools

• Run it under load — drill into wood or cut a scrap piece — rather than just switching it on.
• Watch for heavy sparking, burning smells or overheating, which can mean worn brushes or motor trouble.
• Check the chuck, blade guard and switch, and look for wobble.
• Cordless tools: ask how old the batteries are, check how long they hold a charge, and make sure the charger is included.

Buying machinery

• See the machine running, and ask for its age, usage and service history.
• Check whether it needs single-phase or three-phase power and that your premises can supply it.
• Confirm that spare parts and service are still available for the model.
• Plan loading and transport — heavy machines may need a crane or hydraulic lift.
• Businesses should ask for an invoice where available.

Building material and safety equipment

For leftover tiles, make sure there is enough from the same batch so the shade matches. Check cement bags for the manufacturing date and lumps — cement loses strength with age and moisture. Don’t buy damaged or very old safety helmets and harnesses: protective equipment has a limited life and must not be used after an impact.
