Where to search in Chennai
The IT corridor — OMR from Perungudi and Thoraipakkam down to Sholinganallur and Siruseri, plus Porur and the Guindy–Velachery belt — supplies most of the city's flat-share furniture, desks, monitors and compact appliances. Anna Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Mogappair and T Nagar are family areas, so full-size wardrobes, dining sets, fridges and washing machines come up there more often. Adyar, Besant Nagar and Mylapore turn up older teak furniture and collectibles. For anything electronic, Chennai's reference point is Ritchie Street: test everything before you pay, and ask for the bill.

Humidity, rust and what to inspect
Chennai's coastal air is hard on metal and on wood. On appliances, look behind and underneath for rust, especially on washing machine bodies, fridge backs and AC outdoor units — surface rust is normal near the coast, but flaking metal or a rusted base is a reason to walk away. On furniture, check the joints and the underside for damp, and on anything upholstered, smell for mildew. Ask when the item was last serviced, and get the original bill wherever possible.
