This is the equipment end of the category: home gym gear, treadmills and exercise cycles, better musical instruments, complete cricket and sports kits, and large book collections. These are items worth testing properly and — just as important — worth planning the transport for before you agree a price.
Home gym equipment is the best value here
Fitness equipment follows a predictable pattern: bought with enthusiasm, used for a few months, then it becomes furniture. That is why so much of it appears in this band in genuinely good condition. What to test:
- Treadmills. Run it at several speeds and listen to the motor under load. Check the belt for fraying and slipping, test the incline if it has one, and confirm the console and the safety key both work. Ask its age and whether it has been serviced.
- Exercise cycles and ellipticals. Pedal through the full resistance range, listen for grinding from the flywheel or bearings, and check the display.
- Benches and racks. Check the welds, the frame for bending, and the padding for splits. Test every adjustment position.
- Weights. Count every plate, check bar threads and collars, and inspect for rust.
Ask why it is being sold. "We moved and it does not fit" is a much better answer than a vague one.
Plan the move before you negotiate
A treadmill is heavy, awkward and does not fit in a car. Ask for the weight and dimensions, whether it folds or dismantles, and whether the seller can help carry it. Confirm both your floor and theirs, and lift access on both ends. Factor a tempo and at least two people into your budget — buyers who skip this step are the ones who end up renegotiating or abandoning a deal on collection day.
Better instruments
Mid-range guitars, digital pianos, drum kits and wind instruments appear at this price. Play it before paying, check the neck, frets, action and electronics on a guitar, test every key and output on a keyboard, and check that cases, stands, pedals and adapters are included. Ask about servicing history on anything with electronics.
Large book collections
Complete reference sets, professional libraries and large novel collections turn up here. Check the condition across the whole lot rather than the top few, confirm the count matches the ad, and ask about water damage and storage — a collection stored in a damp cupboard will smell.
