Mumbai wardrobes turn over quickly and flats have no storage, which is why good pre-owned clothing, shoes, bags and occasion wear come onto the market here constantly — branded everyday pieces alongside outfits worn once for a wedding or an event.

What Mumbai sells most
- Branded everyday wear — jeans, shirts, dresses, sneakers and jackets, often barely worn.
- Occasion wear — lehengas, sarees, gowns and suits worn once for a wedding or event.
- Bags and shoes — a strong category here; ask for the bill, box or dust bag on branded items.
- Monsoon gear — raincoats, waterproof footwear and umbrellas appear each June.
Fit, condition and the monsoon
Ask for measurements rather than label sizes — chest, waist, shoulder and length, and insole length for shoes. Ask how often the item was worn and whether it has been altered, since alterations show at the seams and limit resizing. Mumbai's humidity is the local complication: check for mildew spots and any musty smell, especially on leather bags, shoes and anything that has been stored in a cupboard through a monsoon. Leather should be supple, not stiff or powdery. Test zips, hooks and clasps, and look at the underarms, collar and cuffs where wear shows first.
Meeting up
Meet in a public place — a station, a mall, a café — and examine the item in daylight, since photographs flatter fabric. Pay on collection, and never send an advance for clothing you have not seen. Our safety tips have more.
