Used scooters, motorcycles, cars and bicycles are listed across Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai by their owners. Buying directly means no dealer margin and a straight conversation with the person who used the vehicle.
Inspect it, test ride or drive it, and check the paperwork before you pay.
Check the documents
- Registration certificate (RC) — in the seller's name, with chassis and engine numbers matching the vehicle.
- Insurance — valid, and note whether it is comprehensive or third-party. Ask about past claims.
- Pollution certificate (PUC) — current.
- Hypothecation — if the vehicle was financed, confirm the loan is closed and the hypothecation removed.
- Pending challans — check the registration number for outstanding e-challans before paying.
- Transfer — agree in writing how and when ownership will be transferred, and note that a vehicle registered outside Maharashtra involves extra steps including an NOC.
What Mumbai does to a vehicle
Two local factors matter more here than elsewhere. The first is salt air and flooding: check the underbody, wheel arches, chassis rails and door bottoms for rust, and on a car, lift the boot mat and carpet edges to look for water staining or silt — monsoon flood damage is a genuine risk in low-lying areas and affects the electricals long after the car looks dry. The second is stop-start traffic, which wears clutches and brakes far faster than the odometer suggests. On a scooter or bike, check the clutch bite point and brake wear; on a car, feel for clutch slip in higher gears.
Beyond that, start the engine from cold, listen for knocking, look for oil leaks, test every light and indicator, and check the tyres for uneven wear. A professional inspection before purchase is cheap insurance.
