Ask for exact measurements rather than the label size, since sizing varies wildly between brands — chest, waist, shoulder, length, and for shoes the insole length in centimetres. Ask how many times the item has been worn and whether it has been altered; alterations are usually visible at the seams and limit future resizing. Check the underarms, collar, cuffs and hem for wear, look for missing beadwork on embroidered pieces, and test every zip and hook. For anything heavily embroidered, ask when it was last dry-cleaned and factor cleaning into your price.
If a brand matters to you, ask for the original bill, box or dust bag, and look closely at stitching, hardware and labels. Meet in person and examine the item in daylight — photographs flatter fabric. Pay only on collection; never send an advance for clothing you have not seen.
