For anything a child sits in or sleeps in, insist on seeing all the parts assembled before you pay. Ask the seller how old the item is and whether it was ever involved in a fall or an accident. Look up the model to check that it has not been recalled, and confirm that safety harnesses, locks and brakes work. Cot mattresses and anything fabric should be washed before use, and many buyers prefer to buy a new mattress and take only the frame. Car seats are the one category worth being strictest about: buy only from a seller who can confirm the seat's history and age, since the shell and straps degrade over time.
