How to Sell Your Old Laptop Online (Without Regrets)

Laptops lose value faster than phones, so the earlier you sell an unused one, the more you recover. But laptop buyers are also the most detail-oriented on any classifieds site — a listing that answers their questions up front sells dramatically faster.

Back up, sign out, and wipe — in that order

Before anything else: back up your files, sign out of every account (especially your Microsoft/Apple/Google account — an activation-locked machine is unsellable), then do a full factory reset. Never hand over a laptop with your data on it.

List the specs buyers actually search for

Processor generation, RAM, storage type (SSD vs HDD) and screen size — put all four in the title or first line. "i5 11th Gen, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD" answers 90% of buyer questions before they call.

Be honest about battery and hinges

The two most common used-laptop complaints are weak batteries and loose hinges. State the real backup time you get and photograph the hinge area. Honesty here prevents returns, disputes and angry calls.

Price by generation, not by what you paid

A laptop two processor generations old typically sells at 40-50% of its current equivalent's price; three or more generations, 25-35%. Search similar configurations on Olditems in your city and price at the competitive edge of that band.
