Buying a Used Bike? The 10-Minute Inspection Checklist

A used bike or scooter is one of the best-value purchases in India — two-wheelers are built to last and depreciation does the hard work for you. This checklist takes ten minutes at the inspection and catches almost every costly problem.

Papers first — walk away if these are wrong

Check the RC book matches the seller's ID and the chassis/engine numbers on the bike. Confirm valid insurance and PUC. If the bike is financed, ask for the NOC from the financier. No original RC, no deal — a bike without papers is a liability, not a bargain.

Cold start tells the truth

Ask the seller not to warm up the bike before you arrive. A healthy engine starts within a couple of cranks from cold and settles into a steady idle. Blue smoke means burning oil; a rattling top end means an expensive visit to the mechanic.

Frame, forks and accident signs

Sight down the bike from the front: the handlebar, forks and rear wheel should align perfectly. Check for repainted patches, welding marks near the steering head, and scrapes on engine cases — classic signs of a fall or accident.

The test ride checklist

Brakes should bite without pulling to one side, gears should shift without false neutrals, and the bike should track straight hands-light. Listen for chain noise and wheel-bearing hum. Any wobble at speed is a reason to renegotiate or walk away.
