Before you hand over any cash or sign transfer forms, use this quick, practical 10-minute inspection checklist to separate a great deal from an expensive repair nightmare.

Minutes 0 – 2: Paperwork & Legal Verification

Never inspect a bike's mechanicals without checking its documents first. Legal issues or missing papers can render a running bike completely useless.

• Check the Registration Certificate (RC): Match the owner's name, engine number, and chassis number on the physical or digital RC (via mParivahan/Parivahan portal) with the actual stamp on the vehicle frame.

• Check Pending Traffic Challans: Use the Parivahan or local traffic police website to verify if there are unpaid traffic fines attached to the vehicle number plate.

• Verify Insurance & PUC: Check if the bike has valid third-party insurance and a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. If expired, use it to negotiate a lower price.

• NOC & Loan Status: Ensure the RC does not have an active bank hypothecation (loan). If it does, ask for a bank No Objection Certificate (NOC).

Minutes 2 – 4: Cold Engine & Exhaust Test

Always request the seller not to warm up or ride the bike before you arrive. A cold engine reveals true starting health.

• Touch the Engine Block: Place your hand gently on the engine exhaust manifold before starting. If it's already warm, the seller may be hiding cold-start issues or battery weakness.

• Cold Start Check: Turn on the ignition and press the electric starter or kick-start. A healthy engine should idle smoothly without requiring excessive choke or throttle twisting.

• Check Smoke Output: Rev the engine gently and watch the exhaust tip:

  • Blue Smoke: Indicates oil burning inside the cylinder (expensive engine rebuild needed).

  • Heavy Black Smoke: Indicates poor fuel mixture or clogged air filter.

A minor cosmetic scratch is fine, but structural frame damage from a major accident is a safety hazard.

• Check Frame Alignment: Stand 5 feet behind the bike and check if the rear wheel aligns perfectly in a straight line with the front wheel.

• Inspect Handlebars & Footpegs: Scratched bar-ends, bent footpegs, or repainted tank panels are clear indicators of past crashes or side spills.

• Look for Oil Leaks: Peer under the bottom engine guard (sump area) and around gasket joints for fresh oil drops or greasy dirt buildup.

Minutes 8 – 10: The Road Test Drive

Never buy a two-wheeler without riding it through all gears on a safe road.

Test Drive Focus Points:

1. Clutch & Gear Shift: Gears should slot smoothly without popping back out or making loud clunking noises.

2. No-Hands Balance Test: At a low speed (20 km/h) on a flat road, loosen your grip on the handlebars slightly. The bike should track completely straight without pulling to the left or right.

3. Electrical Check: Test the headlight (high/low beam), tail light, turn signals, horn, and digital console meters while riding.
