Browse old coins, currency notes and stamps listed by collectors and families across India — British India and Republic India coins, old notes, commemorative coins, first day covers and stamp albums. Collections often come up when someone inherits them or a collector reshapes their set.
Contact the seller directly, see the items in person and agree a price between you. Olditems takes no commission and never handles payment or delivery.
Beware of "old coin buyer" scams
Ads and calls promising huge sums for an old coin or a note with a special serial number, such as 786, are a common fraud. The caller asks for a "registration fee", "tax" or "RBI charge" before paying — and then disappears. The Reserve Bank of India does not buy old coins or notes, does not charge fees for such deals and does not authorise anyone to do so on its behalf. Never pay anyone to "sell" your coin, and never share an OTP or scan a QR code to "receive" money.
Checking authenticity
- Weight and size. Genuine coins have standard weights and diameters, listed in coin catalogues. Carry a small digital scale and a ruler.
- Metal. Silver coins have a distinct ring when balanced on a fingertip and tapped gently. Most silver and copper coins are not magnetic, so a magnet that sticks is a warning sign.
- Detail. Look at the lettering, edge and design under a magnifying glass. Cast fakes often have soft details, seams on the edge or tiny bubbles.
- Stamps. Check perforations, the gum on mint stamps and the printing under magnification. Reprints and forgeries of valuable issues exist.
For an expensive piece, ask whether it is certified by a recognised grading service, or get an experienced collector or a numismatic society to look at it before you pay.
Condition and grading
Condition drives value. Coins are graded from worn to uncirculated based on how much detail remains; notes by folds, tears, stains and pinholes; stamps by centring, perforations, hinge marks and gum. Do not clean or polish old coins — cleaning removes the original surface and lowers their value.
Handling and storage
Hold coins by their edges and notes by the corners, ideally with cotton gloves. Store coins in acid-free holders or albums and stamps in stock books with mounts rather than hinges. Keep them away from damp, which causes toning, rust and fungus in Indian monsoons.
