Make sure it is not locked
- BIOS or firmware password. Restart and open the BIOS setup. If it asks for a password the seller cannot give, walk away — it can block booting and reinstalling.
- MacBook Activation Lock. The seller must sign out of their Apple ID and turn off Find My before erasing the Mac. Otherwise it stays locked to them.
- Company laptops. Ex-office laptops may be enrolled in company device management. Watch for a "managed by your organisation" message during setup, and ask for proof the company released it.
Battery and storage health
- Battery cycles. On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport in Command Prompt and compare full charge capacity with design capacity. On a Mac, see System Information → Power for the cycle count and condition.
- SSD or hard drive. A free tool such as CrystalDiskInfo shows drive health on Windows. Laptops with a hard drive instead of an SSD feel slow; an SSD upgrade is common and worth pricing in.
- RAM and upgrade options. Check the installed RAM and whether more can be added, since some thin laptops have soldered memory.
Physical checklist
- Keyboard and touchpad. Type every key in a text editor and test clicks and gestures.
- Hinges. Open and close the lid several times. Loose or cracked hinges and a flexing screen bezel are common and can get worse.
- Screen. Check for dead pixels, pressure marks and a flickering backlight.
- Ports, webcam, speakers and Wi-Fi. Test each one, and run a video for a while to check heat and fan noise.
- Charger. An original charger of the right wattage matters; cheap copies can damage the battery or board.
Operating system licence
Most branded Windows laptops carry a digital licence tied to the machine. Check Settings → Activation shows Windows as activated. Ask whether Office or other software is licensed to the seller's account, since that will not transfer.
