How a second hand laptop is valued
A used laptop is priced on what it can still do. Buyers in India mostly want it for college, office work or coding, so the processor generation, RAM and whether it has an SSD decide how fast it feels — and how much they will pay. Age matters because older chips struggle with current software and may miss Windows or macOS updates.
What raises the price
- A recent i5 / Ryzen 5 or better, or an Apple M-series MacBook.
- SSD storage and enough RAM for everyday multitasking.
- Original charger, bill and any warranty left; a business range such as ThinkPad or Latitude.
What lowers it
- HDD-only storage, a weak battery or a missing charger.
- Screen lines, dead keys, loose hinges or overheating.
- A BIOS or iCloud lock, or no proof of purchase.
Checking a used laptop before you buy
Meet the seller in person and spend time with the machine: check the processor, RAM and storage in system settings, run it on battery, test every key, the webcam, speakers, USB ports and Wi-Fi, and look at the screen on a plain white background. Ask for the bill. Compare prices with second hand laptops listed now or budget picks under ₹20,000, and read refurbished vs second hand laptops. Pay only after checking, never as an advance online — see our safety tips.
