At this budget you are looking at larger smart TVs, better camera bodies and lenses, home theatre systems and higher-end audio. These are items where the difference between a good buy and an expensive mistake is entirely down to how carefully you inspect them.
Buy where the item lives
At ₹20,000, never buy anything you have not seen running in the place it currently sits. Larger TVs and home audio cannot be meaningfully tested in a café car park, and a seller who will not let you come and see a large item working is telling you something. Take your own HDMI cable, a pen drive with a plain white and a plain black image, and your phone.
Smart TVs need a longer check than older sets
Beyond the usual panel checks, a smart TV has software that ages. Confirm the apps you actually want still install and open, check that the operating system is still receiving updates for that model, and see how quickly the interface responds — a sluggish smart TV is a daily irritation. Test the built-in tuner and every port, and ask whether the panel or any board has ever been repaired. Look at the screen closely, straight on and from an angle, for uneven backlight and pressure marks.
Cameras and lenses
This band gets you better bodies and genuinely good lenses. Lenses are often the smarter purchase — they hold value and outlast bodies. Check every lens for fungus, haze and scratches by holding it to a bright light, test the zoom and focus rings for grit or stiffness, and check for wobble in the mount. On bodies, ask for the shutter count and photograph a plain bright surface to inspect the sensor. Confirm caps, hood, charger and batteries are included.
Home audio
Test every input and channel individually — a dead rear channel is easy to miss when everything plays at once. Listen for hum at low volume and distortion at high volume, and inspect the cones and surrounds on each speaker.
The paperwork matters more at this price
- Ask for the original invoice and match the serial number on the device with the box.
- Ask directly whether the item has ever been repaired, and by whom.
- Check whether any manufacturer warranty remains and how the brand handles a change of owner.
- Agree transport before the price — large TVs need their original box or careful packing, and must be carried upright.
