What to check before buying a used appliance
- See it running for at least 10–15 minutes, not just switched on for a moment.
- Read the rating sticker for the model number and manufacturing date, and the BEE star label for running cost — a higher star rating means lower electricity bills.
- Refrigerators: check that both compartments cool, the door gaskets seal properly, and the compressor is not unusually loud.
- Washing machines: run a short cycle to check filling, spinning and draining, and look underneath for leaks. A grinding noise during spin often means worn bearings.
- Air conditioners: ask the tonnage, whether it is an inverter model, and when it was last serviced. Budget for uninstallation and reinstallation by a technician.
- Microwaves: heat a cup of water for a minute and check the turntable, door latch and light.
