Where used almirahs turn up in Mumbai
Steel almirahs list all over the city, most often from tenants vacating flats in Andheri, Malad, Kandivali and Borivali and from older homes in Dadar, Chembur, Ghatkopar and Mulund. Sliding-door wardrobes come from newer tower flats in Powai, Goregaon, Thane and Kharghar when a family upgrades to modular. Kids' wardrobes and small cupboards appear from families moving within the suburbs.
What a used almirah costs in Mumbai
Branded steel almirahs hold value best and often list at around half of new even after many years. Solid-wood wardrobes sit a little lower; engineered-wood and sliding units drop fastest because the board swells in Mumbai's humidity and the rollers wear. Compare with the new price of the same model and with other Mumbai listings.
How to check a second hand almirah or wardrobe
- Doors. Open and close every door; they should hang straight and shut without lifting. Sliding doors should glide, not jump the track.
- Locks and keys. Try each lock and locker and count the keys. A missing key on a steel almirah means a locksmith.
- Rust and damp. Check the bottom edge, back and base of a steel almirah for rust; check board wardrobes for swollen edges.
- Interior. Shelves, hanging rod, mirror and drawers should all be present and firm.
- Size. Measure the wardrobe, your doorway, staircase and lift. Tall units often go in laid flat.
In Mumbai, check steel almirahs especially carefully for rust at the base and back — monsoon damp in ground-floor flats gets to them first.
Moving furniture across Mumbai
Distance in Mumbai is measured in time, not kilometres, so buy on your own side of the city where you can — western suburbs to western suburbs, Thane and Navi Mumbai to themselves. A small tempo handles most single pieces; book it for a weekday morning if the route crosses the Western Express Highway or the Eastern Freeway. Older buildings in Dadar, Matunga, Girgaon and the chawl belts have narrow staircases and no lift, while tower societies in Powai, Goregaon and Kharghar need a gate pass and a service-lift booking. Avoid moving upholstered or wooden pieces in the monsoon unless they are wrapped.
A steel almirah moves in one piece and needs two people; empty it, tape the doors shut and measure the staircase or lift first.
