Types of TV unit
Floor-standing TV stands and cabinets are the easiest to buy used: they need no drilling and work in any room. Wall-mounted TV panels look neat but were fitted to someone else's wall, so you will need to drill and mount them again, and the panel may not match your TV's bracket position. Showcases and entertainment units combine a TV space with display shelves, glass doors and storage; they are heavy and bulky, so measure carefully.
Match the unit to your TV
A TV unit should usually be wider than the TV itself. Note your TV's screen size and actual width, and check the unit's width, depth and the weight it can hold. If your TV sits on its own stand rather than a wall mount, make sure the TV's feet fit on the top surface. For wall panels, check whether the panel has a place for your wall bracket, and whether the height will suit your seating.
What to check before you buy
- Sagging shelves. Look along each shelf and the top. Engineered wood that has carried a heavy TV or set-top box for years can bow in the middle.
- Cable cut-outs. Check there are openings for power, HDMI and set-top box cables, and that they line up with where your sockets are.
- Doors, drawers and glass. Open every door and drawer. Check hinges, runners and any glass for chips or cracks.
- Damp and swelling. Look at the base and back panel for swelling or peeling laminate, especially if the unit stood near a window or bathroom wall.
- Dismantling. Ask whether the unit comes apart and whether all screws and fittings are included.
Transport and safety
Most TV stands fit in a small tempo; long entertainment units and showcases may need two people and careful handling of glass. Agree who arranges transport before paying.
