Find used almirahs and wardrobes listed by people across India — steel almirahs, two, three and four door wooden wardrobes, sliding wardrobes and cupboards. Wardrobes are among the bulkiest items to move, so sellers who are relocating often prefer to sell them locally.

Steel almirah or wooden wardrobe?
A steel almirah, of the kind made popular by Godrej, is strong, termite-proof and secure, and a well-maintained one lasts for decades. It is heavy but usually moves in one piece. Wooden and engineered wood wardrobes look better and offer more hanging space, but they need more care when being moved and are vulnerable to damp and termites.
Checking a steel almirah
- Rust. Look at the bottom edge, the base inside and the back panel, where moisture collects. Surface rust can be treated; rust holes cannot.
- Doors. Close them and check the gap is even and the doors line up. Sagging doors mean worn hinges or a bent body.
- Locks and keys. Ask for all keys, including the locker key, and test every lock. A missing locker key is a real problem.
- Shelves and locker. Check that shelves sit level and the inner locker opens and locks properly.
Checking a wooden or engineered wardrobe
- Hinges and doors. Open every door; they should swing and close without dropping. Loose hinges often mean stripped screw holes in the board.
- Sliding runners. Slide each door end to end. It should move smoothly and stay on its track.
- Mirror and drawers. Check the mirror for cracks or loose fixing, and pull every drawer fully out.
- Termites and damp. Look for tiny holes, powder, a swollen base and a musty smell inside, especially where the wardrobe stood against an outer wall.
Dismantling and transport
Many engineered wood wardrobes are damaged when dismantled carelessly — cam locks strip and panels chip. If it has to come apart, ask whether a carpenter assembled it and consider hiring one to dismantle and refit it. Measure the height against your ceiling, doorways, lift and stair turns: a tall almirah often cannot go into a lift or round a narrow landing standing up. Agree who pays for the tempo and loaders, as almirahs need at least two people.
