What a used dining set should cost
A solid-wood 6-seater from a household typically lists at a third to half of its new price; glass-top and engineered-wood sets lower. A full set of matching chairs is worth paying a little more for — chairs are the part that wears, and matching replacements are hard to find.
What to check before paying
- Wobble. Press down on each corner of the table and rock each chair. Loose joints are fixable but should lower the price.
- Top. Look along the surface in daylight for heat rings, deep scratches and, on veneer, lifting edges. Check a glass top for chips at the edges.
- Chairs. Sit in every chair. Check the seat fabric, cane or cushioning and that no leg is cracked.
- Extensions. If the table extends or folds, operate it fully.
- Size. Measure your dining area with chairs pulled out, and the route in.
Moving a dining set from nearby
Most tables unscrew from their legs and chairs stack; a glass top travels flat and wrapped. A 6-seater set fits a small tempo. Agree who arranges and pays for transport before you fix the price.
Buying safely from a stranger near you
- Meet at the address where the item is kept, in daylight, and take someone with you for larger pieces.
- Pay only after you have seen and tested the item. Never send an advance, "token" or delivery charge online to hold something you have not seen.
- Pay by cash or UPI to the seller in front of you. Nobody needs your OTP, and you never scan a QR code to receive money.
