This is the practical end of the furniture market: study tables, chairs, small shelves, stools, shoe racks, side tables and storage units. It is where students furnishing a room and anyone setting up a first flat should start, because at this price transport is often the biggest part of the cost.
Think about transport before you think about price
At this budget the economics are unusual: hiring a tempo can cost a meaningful share of what you are paying for the item itself. That changes how you should shop. Look for sellers close to you, prefer items you can carry or fit in an auto, and — most usefully — buy several items from one seller in one trip. A student clearing a room usually has a table, a chair, a shelf and a lamp going at once, so always ask what else they are selling.
What to check at this price
- Wobble. Push the item at the top corner. A table or chair that rocks needs its joints tightened or re-glued — sometimes easy, sometimes not.
- The base and back panel. Swelling, soft edges and bubbling laminate mean water damage, which does not get better.
- Drawer runners. Pull each drawer fully out and push it back. Sticking drawers on cheap board furniture rarely get fixed.
- Chair mechanisms. On an office chair, raise and lower it several times to test the gas lift, and check the base and castors for cracks. A failed gas lift is the most common fault, and at this price it is usually not worth replacing.
- Missing fittings. Ask whether all screws, shelf pins and keys are present — hunting for replacements costs more than the saving.
What is worth buying here
Study tables, bookshelves, plastic and metal storage, shoe racks and simple chairs all work well second hand, because there is little to go wrong. Solid wood is occasionally listed at this price by someone in a hurry to clear a room, and it is the best buy in this band when it appears — it survives moves that board furniture does not.
Meeting and collecting
Measure your space and your doorway before you travel, check the seller's floor and whether there is a lift, and bring a friend for anything you plan to carry. Inspect the item before paying, and pay on collection.
