Used Study Table and Office Chair

What is usually available

Study tables and compact computer desks come from students and tenants moving out, often sold around the end of the academic year or a lease. Larger L-shaped desks, desks with drawers and height-adjustable desks come from people returning to the office or rearranging their home. Office chairs range from basic revolving chairs to mesh ergonomic chairs with lumbar support, headrests and adjustable arms — sometimes sold in pairs or sets when a small office closes.

How to test a used office chair

• Gas lift. Sit down and raise and lower the seat several times. It should hold height with your weight on it. A chair that slowly sinks has a failing gas cylinder.
• Tilt and lock. Lean back and test the tilt tension and each lock position.
• Casters and base. Roll the chair across the floor. Check for stiff or missing wheels and for cracks in the star base, especially plastic ones.
• Ergonomic adjustments. Try the lumbar support, armrests and headrest. Every lever should work.
• Mesh and cushion. Look for sagging or torn mesh and flattened seat foam.

How to check a study table or desk

• Stability. Lean on the desk and push it sideways. A desk that sways will shake your monitor.
• Top and edges. Check for swollen particle board, peeling laminate and chipped edges.
• Drawers and keyboard tray. Open every drawer and slide the tray; check the runners.
• Height-adjustable desks. Run the motor up and down fully and listen for grinding.
• Size. Measure the space and make sure your monitor and legs will fit.
