Chennai's rental cycle keeps good used furniture circulating all year. Beds, wardrobes, dining sets, sofas and study desks come out of homes along the OMR corridor, Velachery, Porur, Anna Nagar and Adyar as tenants and families shift, most of it only a few years old.
Browse the listings below, contact the seller directly and inspect the piece in person. Olditems takes no commission and nothing is shipped — you collect it or arrange a tempo.
Where furniture is listed in Chennai
The IT corridor — Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Sholinganallur, Siruseri, plus Porur and the Guindy–Velachery belt — produces the bulk of flat-share furniture: single beds, study and work desks, office chairs, two-door wardrobes and compact sofas. Anna Nagar, Ashok Nagar, Mogappair, Kilpauk and T Nagar are family areas, so full-size wardrobes, six-seater dining sets, cots and larger sofas appear there more often. Adyar, Besant Nagar and Mylapore are where older teak and rosewood pieces occasionally come up — solid wood that will outlast anything new at the same price. Tambaram, Chromepet and Pallavaram add steady suburban turnover.
Humidity is the thing to check
- Damp and mildew. Coastal air is hard on wood and fabric. Smell upholstery, and check the back panel and the base of anything that has stood against an outside wall.
- Metal parts. Look at bed frame welds, hinges and drawer runners for rust. Light surface rust is normal in Chennai; flaking metal is not.
- Termites and borer. Tiny round holes with fine powder beneath them mean active borer. It is treatable, but it must be priced in.
- Solid wood versus board. Tap the panels — engineered board sounds hollow and does not survive damp nearly as well.
- Fit. Measure the doorway, the staircase turn and the lift before you buy anything large.
Collection and transport
The buyer normally arranges transport. A tempo from the OMR corridor to the city centre is a meaningful cost on a small purchase, so factor it in before you negotiate. Ask whether the item can be dismantled, and confirm lift access and apartment shifting hours with the seller — many Chennai associations restrict moving to fixed times.
