Where the buyers are in Kolkata
Salt Lake (Bidhannagar) Sector V and New Town–Rajarhat have IT and office workers, many on transfers, who want ready-to-use beds, sofas, wardrobes and desks. South Kolkata — Ballygunge, Gariahat, Jadavpur, Tollygunge and Behala — is a strong market for dining sets, almirahs and solid-wood pieces, and Jadavpur's students buy study tables and single beds. North Kolkata and Howrah have older homes where heavy teak and sheesham furniture comes up when families downsize.
Old wooden furniture
A heavy wooden almirah, palang or dressing table from an old Kolkata house can be worth more than modern furniture of the same size, but only to the right buyer. Photograph the wood grain, carving and joints clearly, say what wood it is if you know, and mention that it is solid rather than veneer. Before pricing, check what similar new pieces cost at the Bowbazar furniture shops or online, and compare with used listings below.
Moving it out
- Many older buildings have narrow stairs and no lift, and big almirahs may not dismantle. State the floor and staircase width, and whether the piece comes apart.
- In direct sales the buyer usually arranges a tempo or a hand-cart for short distances, and the labour to carry it down.
- Newer housing complexes may need a gate pass or intimation to the association office.
Humidity and monsoon
Kolkata's damp months are hard on furniture. Buyers check for termite marks, swelling at the base and musty smells, so air the piece out, clean it and be honest about any repair. Take full payment and confirm it before the furniture leaves; never share an OTP or scan a QR code to receive money.
