Dining tables

Choose by seats and space: a 4 seater suits a small flat, a 6 seater a family, and an 8 seater needs a proper dining area. Leave enough room behind each chair to pull it out.

• Wooden tops — look for water rings, heat marks, deep scratches and lifting veneer. Solid wood can be sanded and polished; veneer and laminate usually cannot.
• Glass tops — run a finger along the edges for chips and check the corners for cracks. Confirm the thickness and whether the glass is toughened.
• Marble and stone tops — check for cracks and stains. Marble is very heavy, so it needs at least two or three people and careful packing to move.
• Chairs — a dining set is only as good as its chairs. Check every chair for loose legs, torn seats and wobble; see our used chairs if you need to replace some.

Study, computer and work-from-home tables

For a WFH desk, check the height suits your chair, the top is deep enough for a monitor and keyboard, and the drawers and keyboard tray slide smoothly. Office and computer tables in engineered wood are often dismantled for moving — check the joints and cam locks have not been stripped. Look under the top for swelling from spills. Centre and side tables

Centre tables are an easy, inexpensive way to finish a living room. Check glass inserts, drawer runners and the legs for looseness. Browse furniture under ₹2,000 for smaller pieces.

The wobble test and other checks

• Press down on each corner and push the top sideways. Any rocking or creaking means loose joints or uneven legs.
• Check the underside for termite holes, powder or damp, especially on legs that stood on a wet floor.
• Ask whether the legs come off — many dining tables and desks are easier to move dismantled.

Compare the asking price with similar current listings, and consider material, top condition and how many chairs are included. Inspect before you pay, never send a token online, and read our safety tips. Agree who books the tempo and loaders, especially for heavy marble.
