This is the most active budget in used furniture. Single and double beds, two-door wardrobes, four-seater dining sets, compact sofas, chests of drawers and full study setups all appear here, much of it only a few years old and coming out of rented flats.
Measure everything before you travel
At this size, the deal that falls apart is almost always the one where something did not fit. Before you agree to collect anything, measure four things: the item, your doorway, the lift interior, and the turn on your staircase. Then ask the seller one question that matters more than any other — does it dismantle? A bed or wardrobe that comes apart can be moved by two people and an auto. One that cannot may need four people and a tempo, and sometimes cannot be got into the room at all.
What to inspect
- Material. Tap the panels. Solid wood sounds dense and is worth a premium; engineered board sounds hollow, is lighter, and should cost less.
- Joints and frame. Press the corners of beds and tables and check for movement. On a bed, look at the frame where the slats sit, which is where failures start.
- Base and back panel. Swelling, dark stains or bubbling laminate mean damp. Check the underside — sellers rarely clean or photograph it.
- Borer. Small round holes with fine powder beneath them mean active borer in wooden furniture. Treatable, but negotiate for it.
- Doors and drawers. Open and close every one. On a wardrobe, check the doors sit flush and the lock works.
- Upholstery. Sit on every seat, check for sagging, smell for damp, and look under the cushions.
Mattresses
Many buyers at this budget take the bed frame and buy a new mattress, which is a reasonable approach — a mattress is the one item where the hygiene and comfort trade-off usually is not worth the saving. If you do take one, check for sagging, stains and smell, and ask how old it is.
Collection
Agree who arranges and pays for transport before you settle the price, confirm the seller's floor and lift access, and check your own society's shifting hours and gate-pass rules. Have the item emptied and ready, inspect it before paying, and pay on collection.
