Buying used furniture: what to check
- Material. Solid wood such as sheesham, teak or mango lasts far longer than particle board or MDF, which swells if it gets wet. Ask the seller what the piece is made of.
- Measure first. Note the size of your room, doorways, lift and staircase before you go to see a sofa or wardrobe.
- Sit, open and shake. Check sofa cushions and springs, loose joints, drawer runners and wardrobe hinges.
- Look for termites and damp — tiny holes, powdery residue or a musty smell.
- Mattresses and upholstery — check for stains, sagging and pests. Many buyers plan for a professional cleaning.
- Dismantling and transport. Confirm whether beds and wardrobes come apart, and who arranges the tempo or mini truck.

Selling furniture before a move
List your furniture two to three weeks before moving day so you are not forced to accept the first low offer. Photograph each piece in daylight, include the dimensions and material, and say clearly whether the buyer needs to arrange pickup. Read how to sell furniture online and our furniture selling guide.
